The B Programming Language – Archaeology and Reconstruction

Everyone knows about C, but only few have seen its predecessor B. Unlike C, B was not compiled to machine code but to various incarnations of an interpreted code. Unfortunately, the original B compiler does not seem to have survived, but the interpreter, standard library and a few binaries have. With this it was possible to recreate a compiler – of course written in B itself – that is reasonably close to what it would have been around 1971. Because B is so minimal it is a perfect language to study how a simple compiler works. In the talk you will see what B is like, how it works, how it was reconstructed, and of course see it running under the first edition of UNIX.

ALTAIR, IMSAI, Dazzler und CP/M – The Beginnings of Individual Computer Graphics

The session is about the development of the first computers based on the Intel 8080 and Zilog Z80, about the people and companies that shaped the early history of personal computers with this technology, and especially about the beginnings of computer graphics for individuals using the Dazzler graphics card from Cromemco. The Dazzler virtually anticipated everything that was technically developed up to the 1980s, and was designed as a complete solution with the Cromemco Cyclops, the first digital camera for private users, the Cromemco D+7A sound card (at that time still designed as a digital/analog converter) and the joystick JS-1. Some of the artifacts will be shown live in the associated exhibition.
